  • Abstract:
Linear Scheduling Methods are best suited to projects that display repetitive characteristics, but their use in the construction industry is limited. Line-of-Balance (LOB) is a Linear Scheduling Method that also makes use of network technology. The main objective of this study is to develop a sophisticated scheduling system that overcome the problems associated with the implementation of repetitive-unit construction. In order to do this, an effective algorithm to facilitate the implementation of a line-of-balance scheduling is established and learning phenomenon, nonlinear and/or discrete activities are incorporated and problems of a visual nature with the presentation is eliminated. RUSS, standing for Repetitive Unit Scheduling System, is a computer program written in "C" language. RUSS is a menu driven program that is based on the general concepts of resource optimization. The input that consists of several types of initial information is obtained from the user. The program analyzes the unit network and calculates the production rate of each activity taking maximum productivity and learning effect into consideration. These data are then plugged into the line-of-balance procedure that produces a table of start and finish times for each activity either at all units or at is first and last unit. Criticalness of the activities and available floats are also calculated. The optimized schedule, in turn, is plotted in a graphic format of the line-of-balance chart for each path separately. The system can make scheduling more effective and reliable with less time and effort. It can also reduce the construction duration and cost. The most significant advantage of the program is the simplicity with which it can convey a detailed work schedule. This ranges from line-of-balance diagrams that can be used by construction managers in making project-wide decisions, to simple bar-charts and time tables that can be used by field staff. When the schedule is easily understood by the field staff and workers, it becomes a goal which can lead to improvements in productivity and to reduced costs.
